A Recent Conversation

Last week I visited Sam Brothers at his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sam graduated from high school in May and he and his family contracted with Narrate to conduct an Audio Portrait. During this focused 30-minute interview, Sam and I chatted about his childhood and his life in high school. We talked about his formative experiences, and his relationships with friends and family. We talked values and we talked goals. At present, Sam is less than a week from his imminent departure to the College of William and Mary.

Hope and enthusiasm beam through Sam, befitting an 18-year old college-bound person. Sam also has deep wells of compassion and intellect that underscore his maturity. Sam is an enthusiastic sportsman with a affection for ultimate frisbee, dogs, and rap, most specifically, Kanye West. He’s an avid student of science and logic. Near the end of the Audio Portrait, Sam shared this nugget he learned from his grandfather and plans to put into practice. “Do something that makes you happy in life. Don’t spend your time in a miserable job waiting for the weekend, because then you’ve spent the majority of your life doing something you don’t like.”

Narrate’s Audio Portraits open a window into the experiences of young people as they move through the stages of their life. An Audio Portrait is a voice-driven snapshot that offers insight into the lives of young people. Graduation is a natural place for younger people to reflect and gather their thoughts. Birthdays, rites of passage. or any other milestone is a good time to record the stories of younger people.
